SaveAir Electronic Air Start System

SaveAir Electronic Air Start System

The Save Air Electronic Air Start system brings together the pneumatic air starting experience of Exline with the engine control design capabilities of Altronic.  The result of this joint effort is an engine system that delivers precision control of the engine starting process.

The Save Air system is an engine mounted position sensing device that determines the precise angular location of the crankshaft, even while the engine is at rest.  The system then electronically triggers air start solenoid valves to control both the start time of the air in head valves and the duration of the components during start up.  The advantages the Save Air system provides are  that it delivers starting air only to the cylinders that are ready, therefore eliminating engine “dead spots” and economizes the required starting air.  Other benefits of the SaveAir system include:

  • Reduced starting air consumption ( Up to 70%)
  • More reliable remote starting
  • Elimination of “dead spots” and manual barring of the engine
  • Reduces lost time waiting for air compressors

The Exline/Altronic SaveAir Electronic Air Start system replaces original air start distributors and also replaces the Exline mechanical pneumatic air start distributor.   All save Air system electronics are universal in design.  Engine-specific log/distribution module flanges and adaptors ensure a simple installation.  Configuration and monitoring of the SaveAir system is done through the display module or via a PC based terminal. Save Air systems can be installed on most 2 or 4 cycle integral compressor engines including Clark, Cooper Bessemer, Ingersoll Rand, and Worthington.  It is easy to retrofit to any engine with In-head air starting valves, 3-20 cylinder, 2 or 4 cycle.  The SaveAir air start system is customized to each individual need depending on the engine model, the number of power cylinders, the presence of starting air valves, and the availability of 24DVC.

Installation requirements are 24 VDC, which can also be the same power supply as the ignition system, a display module, and output and a logic module, one solenoid valve per cylinder, and a relay valve and an 8x8 J box with wiring.  Once installed, the unit can be programmed using a laptop or through the actual display.

The Save Air System is CSA certified Class 1, Division 2 Group C and D certified for hazardous areas.

Features of the Save Air System

  • Crankshaft angular position of known and displayed at all times
  • The system senses when the engine is started and automatically shuts off
  • It can automatically sense presence of starting air to initiate start
  • It regulates cranking rpm at a chosen value by varying the duration of the air pulses
  • Provides a controlled purge cycle with discrete output to engine controls for optimum start of ignition

The starting sequence is initiated by a discrete input or by sensing starting air pressure.  The air valves are electrically actuated to deliver starting air to those cylinders which are most appropriate given the radial position of the crankshaft.  After a selectable number of revolutions, a purge confirm output is actuated which can be used as a permissive to begin ignition firing.
